The topic of these Teaching and Learning Sequences is’ Belonging’ and lead to formative assessment on an aspect of the same topic. Summative assessment could focus on a different aspect of the topic and using different texts.
These formative resources are designed to be used together but can be used separately if required. They recycle language to provide multiple opportunities for students to practise and transfer skills. For example, the listening teaching and learning sequence will ensure students have the background and skills that will enable them to better cope with the demands of the reading activities.
Each of the modules for the EAP unit standards (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) provides two sections:

Teachers can adjust the teaching and learning tasks to a topic which suits their students’ interests, or their programme better. Here are some guidelines for adapting these units to suit another topic:

Unit standard 30511, version 1:
Read and apply understanding in English for academic purposes
Unit standard 30508, version 1:
Write a short crafted text for a specified audience using resource material in English for an academic purpose.

There are a wide range of accessible resources of a suitable level available on the topic. It is expected that the topic will remain current for some time.

EAP unit standard 30509, version 1: Demonstrate and apply understanding of a short spoken text in English for an academic purpose
This sequence is designed for learners preparing for tertiary level study. It is aimed at learners who are learning to listen to understand and process extended text containing complex and abstract ideas.
The teaching and learning sequences will scaffold and prepare students for the formative and summative assessment against this standard. The teaching and learning sequences link to the dimensions of effective practice. Lessons are built around principles of effective teaching and learning for English language learners. Teachers will also need to make links to relevant key competencies. Each learning task includes strategies to scaffold the skills required to achieve this standard.
