Teaching and Learning

The Guidelines for Effective Adolescent Literacy Instruction  outlines the principles of effective literacy instruction.

The technology curriculum guide is available online. These guides have been designed to help teachers create quality teaching and learning programmes. They support teachers in their planning for the alignment of standards to The New Zealand Curriculum.

Learning Inquiry

  • What happened as a result? Assessment is the process of gathering, analysing, interpreting and using information about students' progress and achievement to improve teaching and learning. Refer to Assessment Online
  • Classroom observations play a key role in the Secondary Literacy. This presentation by Trish Holden looks at some ways of ensuring that these observations can be used to effect change that will impact on student learning. The teaching as inquiry template can be used effectively as the basis for classroom observations as it uses student and teacher learning needs as the basis for planning.

Teaching and learning in relation to literacy and language demands in writing

Students will need to use writing to explain events, theories, beliefs, and opinions relevant to curriculum tasks.  They will need to use planning strategies according to the purpose of the task, incorporate specialized vocabulary when writing, and structure their response according to purpose and audience. Students will also need to edit and proofread their text to check meaning, accuracy, legibility, and conformity to the expected standard.
